REC? Reg? 26 JUL 09

Statement by Mr. Lewis herewith.

I may add that on a previous occasion, when Mr. Ross took over from Mr. Johnston, this cash was short Johnston's over $18. I took over from Mr. Ross and on Mr. return he made good this amount. After Mr. Johnston's death I found out owing to a repayment by the French Postal Authorities that Mr. Johnston had paid the equivalent of 50 francs without leaving any record.

From the previous case it appears that Mr. Johnston may have borrowed money from this advance, and may have done so just before he became ill, as his wife arrived in the early morning of September 21st, when he would of necessity have a considerable amount to pay out, he was never able to return to office and he died on September 30th.

Mr. Lewis's case is that he did not know what this cash should amount to, he expected everything to be in order, and also did not expect to be in charge of the Post Office for any length of time.

He made one payment out of this cash for shipmasters' gratuities.

16th June, 1909.

P.M.G.
